International NGOs learn from Strategic Communications Expert

March 16, 2018

In collaboration with the Cleveland Council on World Affairs and the US Department of State, branding and communications expert Brian Sooy led a discussion on strategic communications for nonprofits and non government organizations (NGOs) in the digital age.

international NGOs at Second Harvest

The NGO leaders from Armenia, Bangladesh, Germany, India, Israel, Kenya, Laos, Mexico, Panama, Palestinian Territories, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, & Zambia, are invited to the United States under the auspices of the Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program.

The visitors were here to examine innovative NGO, nonprofit, public service, and advocacy organization management strategies. By meeting with this delegation, you have provided these visitors with important insights into U.S. civil society.

This project was sponsored by the U.S. Department of State through the International Visitor Leadership Program. IVLP invites 5,000 visitors to the U.S. each year and boasts 350+ heads of state as alumni. A critical component to IVLP is Citizen Diplomacy, or diplomacy built "one handshake at a time." Without the work of thousands of Citizen Diplomat volunteers like you, IVLP would not be possible.

IVLP supports the  Cleveland Council on World Affairs' mission to inspire engagement in international relations and world cultures through education, citizen diplomacy, and public dialogue.

The Department of State outlined the following specific objectives for the project:

  • Examine innovative NGO, non profit, public service, and advocacy organization management strategies in the U.S.;
  • Explore the diversity of the non profit sector in the U.S. and the dynamic relationships between business, government, and non governmental organizations; and
  • Review NGO strategies for strengthening leadership, engaging volunteers, using technology and social media, fundraising, and furthering the organization’s missions

This is the fourth time Brian was invited to share his perspective on strategic communications with international visitors.
